Best Electric Milk Frother For The Money

Choosing the best milk frother

So, you want to try your hand at making lattes, and other drinks at home, but don’t have a full-on espresso machine with a milk steamer attachment? You can “steam” your own milk pretty easily with a stove and an electric milk frother. Will it be EXACTLY the same as what you get from a $3,000 espresso machine? No, but will it be pretty darn close? You bet it will.

If you want to get right to the point, here are our two favorites. You can keep reading to learn more, or check these out immediately:

If you use an Aeropress to make your espresso, or a stove-top espresso maker, or anything else besdies a big fancy machine, then you’ll need to look at some of the options for frothing / steaming your milk. There are steamers available too, which are basically the same as the ones you would find on an espresso machine, except detached. We’ll be taking a look at our best choice when it comes to that style, but also handheld milk frothers, and helping you choose the best ones for the money, whether you have a large budget or a smaller one.

Here’s a look at both types of frothers that you’ll need to choose between. Here’s the two main styles:

Types of electric milk frothers

The main different is the first type sits on your counter, you put some milk in it, and it does its thing. The other kind, however, is hand-held and it won’t heat up the milk on it’s own – you’ll still need a heat-source like your stove.

  • With the counter-top style of frother, you simply put  your milk in, and turn it on. It’ll warm the milk up, and also froth it up, so that it’s perfect for a latte or any number of other types of things.
  • To use the handheld electric frother, you pour some milk into a small pot or pan, heat it up, and then froth it by hand with the device.

Which style of Milk Frother should you buy?

Well, both of them actually have their pros and cons, when it really comes down to it. Both styles are really easy to use, but the handheld style is easier to clean since it just needs a quick rinse. The counter-top style is a bit tougher to clean, but not a huge challenge by any means.

The handheld ones are less expensive, but again, you need a way to heat your milk up still too which also creates an extra dish. You do have more control over your bubbles once you get really good with the handheld, but it doesn’t have that “set it and forget” that some people want while they’re busy pulling their espresso shots or brewing coffee, tea, or whatever they’re going to be using the frothed milk with.

We’ve talked about these handheld frothers in the past, as they work excellent, and are a good choice for people who want to make Bulletproof coffee (or tea). If you plan on doing a Bulletproof style drink in addition to things like lattes, then you should probabally go with the less-expensive handheld type of frother and steamer. If, on the other hand, you like the idea of having something that just sits on your counter and takes care of business for you, then go with that style. Or get one of each, neither is really expensive.

Best Electric Milk Frother in 2017:

Electric milk frother

There are cheaper and pricier options availiable for both kinds of milk frothers, and basically we’re interested in the ones that are the best value for the money. That doesn’t mean it’s the least expensive, it just means that the ones we’re about to mention are the products that best exemplify getting great value for your money. These are basically perfect at what they’re meant to do. There may be some that work a bit better, but they’ll cost so much more expensive that we just can’t consider them as the best purchase for the money.

None the less, we’re going to be looking at three different categories for each style of frother. Here’s a quick overview of each category before we jump right into it.

  • The best overall: This is the best one we’ve looked at overall, like if money isn’t an object at all, this is the one to go with.
  • The best for the money: If you don’t mind spending more than the cheapest amount, as long as what you’re getting is actually very worth it, then this will be the pick for you.
  • Best budget option: This option is going to be among the least expensive ones, not necessarily the absolute cheapest but the best you’re going to get in the lower spectrum of your budget. It’s still a perfect viable option, we wouldn’t recommend anything that wouldn’t work great.

Automatic Milk Frothers

These are the ones that sit on your counter and plug right into your wall socket, let’s go over our top recommendations right now:

Best overallBreville BMF600XL Milk Cafe Milk Frother ReviewBreville BMF600XL milk frother review

This isn’t the fanciest most expensive one in the world by any stretch, it’s actually really reasonably priced, relatively speaking, and it does a bang-up job of preparing your frothy milk for any number of different beverages. Starbucks has a new drink called a Dark and Stormy, and this would do a good job making the sweetened almond-milk foam at the top.

So, what makes it worth the extra money? Well, it’s super-well reviewed, basically everyone that uses it says it improves their day to day coffee and tea drink-making experience, and that’s largely due to the fact that it uses special discs to get a very smooth, even froth to your milk, rather than the other options on this page that don’t do it as nicely.

It uses induction heating, so you can take the part that holds your milk, remove it, and easily wash it in the dishwasher or even just give it a quick rinse by hand. Either way, very easy to clean and you don’t need an extra pot or pan to heat the milk up first. It’s a super convenient option, Breville is a great brand for this type of thing, and it just works great.

Best for the money: Secura Automatic Electric Milk Frother and Warmer

It’s competitively priced, super high-rated by the vast majority of people who use it, it does an adequate 1 cup of milk at a time (Or get the 2 cup size for about $20 extra). This product is great for making all types of hot drinks, not just lattes or Bulletproof drinks where you’re mixing oil into a hot liquid. It’s a pretty basic item, but it does a good job and it costs a fair price.

With the 2 year warranty, and astonishingly positive reviews from people who love it and use it every single day, it’s hard not to recommend this option if you’re looking for something solid, quality, that’s going to get the job done without spending an arm and a leg.

Best budget option: Blümwares Vienne Automatic Milk Frother and HeaterBlümwares Vienne Automatic Milk Frother and Heater Review

This is an affordable option, it’s usually around 25% less expensive than our “Best for the money” pick of the one made by Secura. It works good, saves you some cash, and will definitely take your homemade latte game to the next level.

Note: There’s also a really good Epica milk frother that’s worth checking out here.

Handheld Electric Milk Frothers

These are the ones that are battery operated, that you hold in your hand, and where you’ll still need a heat source to warm the milk before frothing it. It’s more manual, hands-on, which some people prefer becasue it gives you more control.

All of these are relatively experience, from the Best Overall pick (by Powerlix) to the best budget option (by ) so in this case, unless you’re really trying to save a few bucks, we recommend just grabbing the best one. None the less, we’ve included a cheaper option as well, and it’ll do the job – it just might not be quite as well made.

Overall best handheld milk frother & best for the moneyPowerLix Milk FrotherPowerLix Milk Frother Handheld Battery Operated Foam Maker

This is a solid choice and you can often find it for under $20. It’s a bargain, does a great job, and should last you a long time. There are thousands of positive reviews all over the web, it’s kind of considered the “go-to” if you want a great handheld frother for milk and almond milk and similar things for your hot or cold beverages.

One of the advantages of a handheld option is that you can use it to create a foam for cold drinks, whereas some of the automatic ones have heaters built right in. However, if you’re making hot drinks, it makes the handheld option a little more involved to use.

Finally, here’s the last option we’re looking at today. It’s about half the price as the other handheld we looked at, give or take, and still does a really good job. This versatile frother also comes with a special little spoon which is handy to have.

The big noticeable difference between this and the Powerlix milk frother is the fact that this one doesn’t come with a stand. It might not seem like a huge deal, but if you have the one with the stand, you know how useful the stand can be. Basically, it keeps your frother clean and out of the way, it takes up less space when it’s on the stand, and its not laying directly on your counter.

Conclusion & final thoughts

All in all, each one of these makes a great choice. They all have their advantages, so it really comes down to finding the balance between your budget and what features matter most to you, and what you’re going to be using it for.

If you just want to get right to the point, here’s a summary of our two top choices, one from each category.
